Female Pelvic Medicine & Reconstructive Surgery

 

Overview

Welcome to the Female Pelvic Medicine and Reconstructive Pelvic Surgery Fellowship in the Division of Gynecologic Specialties, Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology at Duke University Medical Center. This fellowship provides training in both clinical and research aspects in urogynecology and reconstructive pelvic surgery. Time commitment during the fellowship is approximately 50% clinical and 50% research.
 
The fellowship attracts top candidates and is fully accredited by the American Board of Obstetrics and Gynecology for one position per year for a three-year program. This fellowship is one of the first four accredited programs of its kind in the United States.
 
The faculty are national recognized for their expertise in clinical skills, superb academic training, excellence in epidemiology and outcomes research methodology and gynecologic endoscopy. The faculty includes:

The fellowship’s strengths include:
 
    • Excellent affiliation with Duke Clinical Research Institute , a nationally recognized academic contract research organization with clinical trials and outcomes research expertise. Outstanding affiliation with numerous research efforts related to women’s health within Duke University Medical Center and with national institutes.
    • A large diverse and complex referral patient population cared for in conjuction with expert faculty who manage complex pelvic organ prolapse via transabdominal, transvaginal and robotic approaches. Urinary incontinence and voiding dysfunction including neurogenic bladders, defecatory dysfunction, fecal incontenece, and other pathologies requiring reconstruction such as urinary and rectal fistulae, urethral diverticulm and congenital anomalies.
    • Active collaboration and integration with clinicians in urology (video urodynamics), physical therapy, colo-rectal surgery, plastic surgery, neurology (electrophysicalogic testing), gastroenterology, geriatrics and radiology (ultrasound, pelvic fluoroscopy, evacuation proctography, MRI).
    • A state-of-the–art neuropharmacology and micturition physiology laboratory is available for basic research for our fellows. Other basic science collaborative efforts include research in neural prosthesis and molecular genetics.
    • Faculty and fellows regularly present original research at national and international organizations in the field. Our fellows have won awards for their research papers presented at the American Urogynecolgoic Society, the Society of Gynecologic Surgeons, and the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists.
    • One of seven institutions in the Pelvic Floor Disorders Network
    • Fellows have a choice of pursuing an advanced degree option of a Master of Health Sciences in  Clinical Research Training Program .
